With government subsidies for national universities decreasing year by year, these institutions are now expected to generate their own revenue. As part of this effort, many national universities in Japan have begun offering naming rights.

For instance, at Shinshu University, naming rights for a classroom cost approximately 150,000 yen annually for a space under 50 square meters, or around 900,000 yen for a space between 250 and 300 square meters. A classroom previously known as “Building A” could, for example, become the “Ajinomoto Hall.”

One condition is that advertisements promoting alcohol or encouraging drinking are prohibited. Therefore, a name like “Super Dry Hall” would likely not be approved.
